What is a Google Sitemap and what is it used for ?

The Google Sitemap allows a webmaster to inform search engines about URLs on a website that are available for crawling. A Google Sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs for a site.

What is it used for?

  1. Sitemap is helpful when the site is very large and there is a chance for the web crawlers to overlook some of the new or recently updated content
  2. It is useful when the site has pages that aren't easily discovered by Googlebot during the crawl process.
  3. Highly helpful in the case when the websites have a huge number of pages that are isolated or are not well linked together
  4. Is also very useful in the case when a website has a few external links
